Clothing

Clothing is a vital part to the mise-en-scene of our film. It is paramount to the audience having the most personal identity with the film, with the wrong clothing a film just does not make sence and will make the viewer watching agitated.

FATHER: The 'Casual look' that we have given the father puts him in the comfort zone that is his own home. This signifies to the audience that he is in relative comfort. This provides a red herring for the audience, which is likely to interpret this character as an innocent, who is brutally attacked. The disequilibrium comes later, when the audience realise that this normal acting man has become a murderer.

THIEF: Trying to hide as much as he can, long jeans to be allusive and a hood up signifies that we cannot see what this man is doing or who he is. This immediatly encourages the audience to decode his actions as being those of a villain.

DAUGHTER: Wearing matching pyjamas to show her innocence in the situation, perhaps even ignorance to what is going on. Not only this but it is what distinguishes her from being the man's husband to being the mans daughter as it connotes a level of young age.

Lighting

House Scene:

To increase the level of personal identification as high as we could we had to have the lighting just right. For this to be the case it had to be quite light as we were in a friendly suburb with the film being at its equilibrium. This is a typical convention of an action thriller and allows there to be a contrast in lighting which is evident to the viewer.

Kidnap scene:

The light for this scene was far lower as we filmed it at dusk, this is because the surroundings are far less inviting and it gives the viewer action coding because they know something is going to happen. In addition to this, it keeps the identity of the driver secret untill the end of the film, and therfore does not interupt the enigma coding of the non-linear narrative.

Field Scene:

Once more this is a dark event taking place and so the lighting is clear but quite low. this again has action coding because people know something (the body getting dumped) is about to happen. adding to this is the fact that vengeance does actually not have a new equilibrium so the film is finished on low lighting to portray the fact that the hero has not actually got anything in the end, wheras if there was a new equilibrium the film would finish with high lighting.

Musical Inspiration - Bourne Identity

Though we found it difficult to make a decent sound track to match our film in the kidnapping scene because we only had garage band at our disposal as the sylabus says that only non commercial music can be used without permission, we found when conducting our research that the famous car chase scene in the bourne identity is actually an unfamilliar track but works perfectly with the chase in the film. Although are chase is slightly different in the way that they are chasing a man instead of a man in a car, we have made perfect music for the scene that we needed.

Inspiration - Law Abiding Citizen

Once more the decision to have the scene where the man upon answering the door is knocked out came from our inspiration of the film Law Abiding Citizen. The sudden shock of such a fast paced attack from an everyday event was appealing to us. This is because it follows Katz's theory of personal identity; it makes the audience scared because opening the door is probably something they do every day and so to see something so shocking happen from an everyday event enthralls the audience.

A problem that we faced upon making this scene which has hampered its overall effect is the sound effects that we could use. There were none on Garageband that were appropriate and when we attempted to replicate the noise from Law Abiding Citizen it sounded awful and we could not embed the sound from YouTube, because that scene is so violent that they do not actually have it online.

Inspiration - Halloween

The decision to use the broken frame in the production was influenced by the 1982 film Haloween, which uses a broken frame at the start of the film, where the villain is shown looking through the window in a point of view shot at his victim.

Halloween uses Katz's theory of of personal identity to bring the audience to have as much attention on the film as possible. because they can recognise the surroundings the feel a personal connection with the film and therfore allow themselvs to get more into it. We wanted to use the same vouyerism in our film, where the audience is forced to watch something that they should actually be able to see, and this is where the inpiration for the broken frame murder scene came from.

Vengeance

News Bullitin Script

The script for our news backing story has taken much more time than we would have liked. With me and Martin spending probably the best part of 3 hours recording and re-writing and re-reading to have it worded the best that it can sound, however not only this, but to make sure it times perfectly with the film, because the speech has to come over the right part of the right scenes. In addition to this we added the sound track from the BBC news broadcasting to make it as realistic as possible.

Below is our final draft and what appears in the film.

A 14-year old girl has been murdered as part of a robbery last night in buckinhamshire. This is one of a string of recent break in’s in the area, but this is the first to result in a murder.

Police say that they have added extra convoys and now have patrol vehicles survey the area regularly. Mr simons, the father of the recently deceased, and who came into close contact with the thief and murderer, before being incapasitated has made a statement to express his anger and disappointment with the neighbourhood watch. He also makes reference to the inmates that have been recently released from nearby Farnham common prison, he said: “ it is clear that with the recently released inmates there is a rising correlation of burglaries”

Beep beep….

Police are now investigating a reported kidnapping in Buckinghamshire on Monday.,the man who was being monitered as a part of rising crime rates in the area has suddenly gone missing and police are saying they fear the worst. The man who was said to be well connected could have been subject to an honour killing with the gang in the area , police are pleading for any information.; they are searching the area, but have yet to find the body.
